Photo and description

The shores of Lake Worthersee began to be actively built up with private palaces and villas in the period from 1864 to 1938. The Austrians learned about this blessed place after the appearance of the Southern Railway, which greatly facilitated the journey to this region. Gradually, buildings began to appear here in the style that modern art critics and architects call the "Werthersee style" - after the name of the lake. Examples of buildings in this style can be found in the cities of Pertschach, Velden, Krumpendorf, Klagenfurt and on the southern shore of Lake Worthersee.

What is the Worthersee style? It is an eclectic style that combines features of Art Nouveau, Regional Romanticism, Baroque and English styles. Historical houses on Lake Worthersee differ significantly in their architecture from summer cottages in other Austrian regions.

About ten architects have designed villas in Pertschach. The palaces designed by the Czech architect Josef Viktor Fuks are of great interest. Among them, one can especially note the Seeblik villa, built for a certain Francis Lemes. This building in the style of late historical romanticism was erected near Lake Worthersee in 1888.

The two-storey Villa Seeblik is distinguished by an abundance of asymmetrical details: turrets, verandas, balconies. To combine all this in one harmonious structure was only possible for a real genius from architecture. Experts also note the use of different types of roofs in the same building: a gable roof rises above the main building, which is decorated with turrets with hipped roofs and onion-shaped tops.
