Back in the 7th century BC, it was an important independent polis for the country, considered the stronghold of power and strength of Athens. Since 1882, archaeological excavations organized by the Greek Archaeological Society have been carried out in these places. During the excavations, a lot of the most interesting finds related to the cults of Demeter and Persephone were discovered. The cults of these goddesses were extremely popular in ancient Eleusis. They were dedicated to sacred rites, called the Great and Small Mysteries. For the Mysteries, magnificent colonnades were created in the 2nd century AD, today only their ruins can be seen.
