On the site where Sultanahmet Square is now located, in ancient times there was a hippodrome. The construction of the hippodrome was started under the Emperor Septimius Severus in 203 AD. From 330 to 334, the hippodrome was rebuilt. Its size began to reach 450 meters in length and 120 meters in width.

At the same time, about 100,000 people could be at the hippodrome. Where the German Fountain now stands on Sultanahmet Square was the entrance to the hippodrome.

Chariot races were held at the hippodrome. After the fall of Constantinople, the hippodrome became a venue for fairs and entertainment.
