Funds for the construction were allocated by the Lydian king Croesus. The design of the temple was carried out by the architect Khersifron, who came from Knossos. After the death of the architect, the construction was continued by his son – Metagenom. The construction was already completed by the architects Demetrius and Peonius. The best masters of that time took part in the creation of the sculptural decoration of the building. In the future, the temple was used not only as a place for religious ceremonies, but at the same time as the business and financial center of Ephesus. In 356 BC, according to legend, on the night when the future Alexander the Great was born, the temple was set on fire by the conceited citizen Herostratus, who wants to be glorified in this way. The city authorities forbade mentioning his name in the future, but the name of Herostratus still went down in history. By the 3rd century BC, the building was completely restored. The money for the construction was allocated by Alexander the Great. The building was designed by the architect Deinocrates, who retained its former appearance, but raised the temple to a higher foundation. In 263, the temple was plundered by the Goths. In 391-392 during the reign Theodosius II, pagan cults were banned in the country, as a result of which the temple was closed. A small church was built in its place, which was also destroyed. The marble facing of the temple, as well as the roof, were dismantled by local residents for various buildings. For many months, the English archaeologist Voodoo tried to find the temple, and in 1869 he finally got lucky. The foundation of the temple was completely uncovered only in the 20th century, and traces of the temple burnt by Herostratus were also found under it.
