This monastery is called one of the most significant Christian shrines.

The remains of a huge column, whose height was 12 meters, have been preserved here. Simeon built it himself, in order to escape on it from pilgrims who came to see the hermit living in the desert.

In 459, after the Monk Simeon died, the Byzantine emperor Zeno gave the order to build a cathedral on the edge of the cliff ... The temple has a unique cross shape – entrances from the basilicas located on the four cardinal points lead to the octagon-shaped courtyard.

In the 10th century, the temple   surrounded by a high fortress wall with twenty-seven towers. This building was named Simeon's Fortress. In the 12th century, the fortress was captured by the crusaders.
