The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus is one of the famous Seven Wonders of the World and is a tombstone erected in honor of Mausol – Carian ruler. The mausoleum was built by order of the wife of Mavsol – Artemisia II, in the middle of the 4th century BC

The construction of the mausoleum began in 353 BC. even before the death of Mavsol. The design of the mausoleum was attended by the Greek architects Pytheas and Satyr, as well as the most famous sculptors of that era – Scopas, Timothy, Briaxis and Leochara.

Architecturally, the mausoleum was very different from the classical architecture of that time – the building was almost square in shape, and its height exceeded the side of the base.

The mausoleum existed for about 19 centuries. In the 13th century, after a strong earthquake, the building was destroyed, and   in 1522, the Ionite knights dismantled the remains of the mausoleum for the construction of a knight's castle.

In 1846, the ruins were examined by the British Museum expedition, led by Charles Thomas Newton. As a result, at the end of the research, several versions of its initial appearance were compiled.
