Rating: 7,5/10 (100 votes) Manchester Castle is a medieval fortress located on a plateau between the Irwell and Irk rivers in the suburbs of Manchester, UK.
The first mention of this fortress dates back to 1184, and documents from 1215 indicate that then the castle belonged to the wealthy Grayley family, the barons of Manchester. Initially, all the buildings of the castle were wooden, but over time they were all rebuilt in stone. The castle was surrounded by three moats filled with water. In one of his books, the writer and historian Heeler Bellock names Manchester Castle as one of the two most significant defensive lines in Medieval England alongside the River Thames.
