Photo and description

Armacao de Pera is a small town in the Algarve. Today it is a very popular tourist destination. The city is located along the coast and attracts those who want to relax on sandy beaches and admire the picturesque surroundings.

The name of the village consists of two parts. The first part is the name of the Pera region, which was originally a fishing port, and the second part is `` Armasan '' - specially equipped boats for fishing with a combined system of fishing nets. Such boats were invented by the Moors. There are two cities with this name in the municipality, therefore, Armacao de Pera is also called Pera de Baixu, or Lower Pera, in order to distinguish it from another city, whose name is Pera de Sima, or Upper Pera.

Before As the town became popular with tourists, fishing has been the sole source of income for the inhabitants of Armacao de Pera for centuries. Sardines and tuna - the most common types of fish were salted and transported to other provinces in Portugal for sale. Even today, you can see fishing nets in the sea.

In the 16th century, a fort was built off the coastline by a successful shipowner to protect the town from pirate raids. Inside the fort there is a small chapel of St. Anthony, built almost simultaneously with the fort. Nowadays one of the walls of this ancient fort can be seen with an entrance gate, above which the royal coat of arms hangs.

Armacao de Pera is especially popular during the summer months when you can enjoy the warmth of the sun and relax on the beautiful beaches.
