The cathedral was built in 1841-1844 and cost 15 thousand feet, which is equal to 1 million 210 thousand pounds sterling by modern standards. The architect of the cathedral is Augustus Pugin, who was also the creator of the London Parliament building.
The cathedral is made in the style of early English Gothic and is considered one of the best works of Pugin. The interior of the cathedral is richly decorated in the same early English Gothic style. The church received the status of a cathedral in 1852.
There is a choir in the cathedral, which includes 32 adult performers and 12 students. The choir's repertoire includes a large number of musical works of various genres. In addition to performing music in the cathedral itself, the choir performs at various city events.
