Rating: 7,9/10 (824 votes) Needles are chalk cliffs on the west coast of the Isle of Wight. They are located in the western part of the Alum Bay of the Solent Strait, not far from the westernmost point of the island.
The chalk cliffs can be reached with the regular Newport-Yarmouth-Alum Bay bus, the Needles Tour and the Island Bonfire.
In the immediate vicinity of the chalk cliffs, an artillery battery was built in the early 1860s, designed to protect the western part of the Solent Strait from enemy ships. The engines of the Black Knight launch vehicle were tested here in the 1950s. Today the artillery battery is open for inspection.
