In the 1850s, residents of the city created the Zoological Society, whose donations contributed to the construction of Germany's second zoo, in Frankfurt am Main.
Initially, the zoo was located on the outskirts of the city, so it was not popular. In this regard, in the winter of 1874 the zoo was moved to a new location.

The Second World War had an even greater devastating effect on the zoo. All buildings were destroyed during the bombing. The new director Bernard Grzimek, who was appointed in 1945, went to great lengths to revitalize the zoo.
The zoo became world famous when a captive apes breeding program began. .
