Frankfurt Zoo – a zoo in the city center, covering an area of 13 hectares. One of the largest zoos in Germany. Founded in 1858.

In the 1850s, residents of the city created the Zoological Society, whose donations contributed to the construction of Germany's second zoo, in Frankfurt am Main.

Initially, the zoo was located on the outskirts of the city, so it was not popular. In this regard, in the winter of 1874 the zoo was moved to a new location.

During the First World War, the zoo fell into disrepair. However, even then, the leadership tried to preserve endangered animal species. The Second World War had an even greater devastating effect on the zoo. All buildings were destroyed during the bombing. The new director Bernard Grzimek, who was appointed in 1945, went to great lengths to revitalize the zoo.

The zoo became world famous when a captive apes breeding program began. .

The Frankfurt Zoo is home to about five thousand animals, representatives of 600 species, an exotarium, a bear enclosure, a bird enclosure, a separate section for nocturnal animals. The zoo has a restaurant, cafe, and concerts in summer.
