The museum was founded in July 1932 For the first time, the museum opened its doors to visitors in November 1936. Initially, the oldest museum in the district was located in the cold and damp barracks of Rybtrest. The museum exposition was presented by 8 sections that characterized the political history, economy and natural resources of the district, the old and new way of life of the Khanty and Mansi peoples. In 1981, construction began on a new museum building in the capital. The construction was completed in 1986. Until 1991, the museum staff worked on the creation of a new stationary exposition, the opening of which took place in December 1991. by the decision of local authorities, the institution was transformed into the Museum Complex "State Regional Museum of Nature and Man". In November 1999, the Foundation of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Ugra was founded under the name "Museum of Nature and Man". At the same time, the museum was reconstructed using the latest technologies, thanks to which this museum is one of the most modern in the Ural Federal District. In the funds of the Museum of Nature and Man, there are more than 140 thousand exhibits from a variety of collections. The museum contains unique exhibits: objects of paleofauna, including the skeleton of a trogontery elephant, similar to it in the world - several units. The museum collection includes archaeological, paleontological and ethnographic collections, as well as written and documentary sources, rare book fund, photo fund and so on. The archaeological fund consists of more than 60 thousand exhibits: clay figurines, tools, iconic cast figurines, weapons, jewelry and much more. The main fund of the ethnographic department is represented by 4 thousand items: traditional costumes, cult attributes, hunting gear and household utensils. In the department of nature, you can see three extensive collections: mycological, zoological, botanical, where stuffed animals and birds, bird nests, a collection of skins are kept.
