The Strasbourg Museum of Decorative Arts is located on the ground floor of the Rohan Palace. This museum was founded in 1872, and the main subjects of its exposition were the things of owners and kings who came to the palace as a residence.

Initially, decorations and household items of royal dynasties were presented here , thereby illustrating the change in cultural trends: baroque, rococo, classicism – all of them are presented in a variety of different items.

By the beginning of the XX century, the museum's exposition was divided into two halls – in the first one there were still objects belonging to a representative of the august families, and in the second they placed the results of the works of Alsatian blacksmiths, creating completely unique things. Porcelain dishes and many other ornaments were finished with precious metals, not inferior in beauty to Chinese sets and figurines.

The Second World War seriously affected the state of the museum. When Alsace was liberated from German troops, the Allied aviation inflicted powerful airstrikes on the city, thereby destroying numerous historical monuments. Rohan Palace was no exception, and the restoration work continued for over 40 years, they were completed only in the early 90s of the last century. At the same time, the museum started working again in full force, displaying its best exhibits.
