The square was laid out in the XIII century. From that moment on, this square was firmly entrenched in notoriety as a place of public executions. Many criminals were executed here, and the methods of killing were the most inhumane, including quartering and burning alive. It was on this square that the guillotine was first tested in action, which later moved to Place de la Concorde.

In the year the Town Hall was built, in 1803, the square was renamed the Hotel de Ville.
