The temple is located on the Castello hill, on the site of an ancient Roman fortress. Near the church you can see the huge tower of Torre Embriachi. The church was built in the Romanesque style in the 8th century. In our time, many works of art are kept within its walls, which were donated to the temple by the famous families of Genoa. The main entrance to the temple was made in the Tuscan style in the 15th century, it is surrounded by Gothic lunettes dating from the 14th century. The covered gallery was painted with frescoes depicting the Annunciation, as well as saints and Madonnas, created in 1451 by Giusto d ’ Alemanya. On the top floor of the gallery there is a marble ark and a sculpture of Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
