The Basilica of Santa Maria di Castello is part of the religious complex of the Dominican Order. The temple is located on the Castello hill, on the site of an ancient Roman fortress. Near the church you can see the huge tower of Torre Embriachi.

The church was built in the Romanesque style in the 8th century. In our time, many works of art are kept within its walls, which were donated to the temple by the famous families of Genoa. Here are the works of such famous painters as Lorenzo Fasolo, Giuseppe Palmeri, Alessandro Gherardini, Francesco Maria Schiaffino, Pier Francesco Sacchi, Francesco Boccaccino and others. The frescoes depicting the `` Stories of David '' deserve special attention. and majolica – painted ceramics, executed by local painters in the 16th century.

The altar of the church is decorated with the marble composition `` Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary '', created in the 17th century by Domenico Parodi. To the left of the presbytery in the chapel is the painting Santa Rosa of Lima by Domenico Piola. In another chapel, there is a painting by Anton Maria Maragliano, Madonna del Rosario.

The baptistery contains a polyptych, decorated in the 15th century by Lombard masters. The main entrance to the temple was made in the Tuscan style in the 15th century, it is surrounded by Gothic lunettes dating from the 14th century.

The covered gallery was painted with frescoes depicting the Annunciation, as well as saints and Madonnas, created in 1451 by Giusto d ’ Alemanya. On the top floor of the gallery there is a marble ark and a sculpture of Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
