The building of the Cathedral was built back in the 18th century, by order of local Jesuits. This cathedral became quite by accident. At that time, there were active confrontations between the Cuban population and the then dominant Spain. The main temple of Havana, which was located in the port of the city, was destroyed by a cannon volley, and the Cathedral became the main temple of the city. In less than a hundred years, it changed the name of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary to the Cathedral of Saint Christopher. There is a legend that part of the remains of Christopher Columbus rests under the pulpit. Until now, a plate with a mention of this has been preserved, however, documentary evidence has not been found. Dismantling the department is impossible under an unwritten law. Mass in the cathedral is held every Sunday, and on holidays it is especially crowded.
