The City Municipal Exhibition Hall of the Department of Culture was founded in 1997 in the city of Petrozavodsk. In 2002, the exhibition hall was transformed into a Municipal Cultural Institution called the City Exhibition Hall, which is one of the largest and most famous exhibition grounds in the heart of the city.

About 12-14 exhibitions are presented every year. The exhibition hall presents graphics, sculpture, painting, media art, photography, and many other types of visual arts. Thematic, as well as group exhibitions of qualified and professional artists from Petrozavodsk, other Russian cities and from abroad - this is the vast scope of interests of the proposed exhibitions.

One of the most important directions in the work and activities of the City Exhibition Hall is related to contemporary foreign art, especially in the Nordic countries. During the existence of the museum, exhibitions of artists from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and the Faroe Islands have been held here more than once. Among the considerable number of exhibitions that were organized by the City Exhibition Hall, there are two projects, intended for long-term viewing and leading through historical development. Such exhibitions include: "Aquabiennale", as well as the "Impressions" triennial. The project "Aquabiennale" has been collecting numerous works of watercolors from many countries in the city of Petrozavodsk every year for two years. The Imprints project is an exhibition dedicated to contemporary art, as well as to the numerous and varied types of printing of various kinds of images on various surfaces: film, paper, clay and others.
