The ancient city of Lilybey in Italy, the resort of Sicily
Rating: 7,5/10 (100 votes)  Lilybey is the ancient and main Punic city of Sicily, located in the western part of the island. In our time, on the site of Lilibey, the city of Marsala is spread. In ancient times, the city was one of the most important Carthaginian settlements in Sicily. The city was surrounded on three sides by the sea, and from land it was protected by powerful fortifications of towers and walls. The Carthaginian fleet was located here, and during the Punic War the city was a theater of military operations. After the war, the city was taken over by the Roman Empire, and the residence of the Roman master was located here. At the time, Lilybey was the largest and most important settlement in Western Sicily. The ruins of this ancient city can be seen today right in the center of Marsala. Since 2002, the city has been working on the creation of the Archaeological Park. Archaeologists make important discoveries every year. During the Middle Ages, the city was completely abandoned. In 1939, scientists discovered the foundation of a building with spacious rooms surrounding a four-column atrium. In the 1970s, it turned out that construction in Lilibey was carried out in two stages: the first structures were built here in the II-I centuries BC, and the most recent - and ndash; in the II-III centuries AD During the excavations carried out in 2000, part of the marble pavement, the marble statue of Venus Kallipygos, as well as ancient coins were raised to the surface of the earth. The ruins of a house with a mosaic floor, a necropolis and Carthaginian fortifications are also well preserved to this day. Particularly noteworthy is the Crispia of Salvia dungeon, which is an underground chamber dating back to the 2nd century AD. The walls of the chamber are decorated with various scenes. During excavations carried out in 2008, a statue of the goddess Isis was removed from the ground, and the ruins of the Temple of Hercules were discovered.
