Today, Magione, along with other churches of the Archdiocese of Palermo, bears the title of `` minor basilica ''. The church was built in the 12th century. The construction was sponsored by the patron Matteo d ’ Angelo. The exact date of construction is still unknown, but historians believe that the foundation of the building was laid around 1150 and 1190. The only fact remains that already in 1191 the order of the Cistercians took possession of the temple. Six years later, the knights of the Teutonic Order became the owners of the church. In the 15th century, the basilica was converted into an ordinary parish church. During the Second World War, the temple was seriously damaged. In the 1950s, reconstruction work began in the building, during which the interior of the church was freed from baroque elements. Currently, the church is one of the best preserved monuments of Sicilian-Norman architecture. The facade of the building is divided into three tiers, formed by blind arches. It does not have complex decorations and inlays. The interior decoration has three naves with side chapels, separated from the central nave by rows of marble columns. The columns are crowned with pointed arches. The interior of the temple is rather simple and has no decorations. One of the walls of the basilica is adjoined by a covered gallery, consisting of double columns and beautiful capitals, forming an inner courtyard.
