The Archaeological Museum of Agrigento is one of the most popular attractions in Sicily.

The museum was erected on a hill in the 60s of the last century, according to the project architect Franco Minissi. The hill offers a stunning view of the Valley of the Temples and the city itself. The museum is housed in both modern and old renovated buildings. The grand opening of the museum took place in 1967.

Inside the museum there is a large collection dedicated to the past of Magna Graecia and the history of Akragas (formerly called Agrigento). The exhibits are arranged in chronological order. The museum tour starts from the Gothic portal of the Church of San Nicola. First stop – cliff with a picturesque view of the Valley of the Temples, second stop – ruins of the upper agora, third stop – the covered gallery of the Cistercian monastery, which houses most of the exhibits. Here you can see dishes dating from the 7th century, clay figurines, classic vases, objects of sacrifices, a bowl with the image of Andromeda and Perse. Also of particular note are the statues of young athletes, artifacts of the Sikans and Trinacria.
