Lion of Belfort in France

The lion was originally supposed to become a symbol of the resistance of the city of Belfort in the Franco-Prussian war. The sculptor Bartholdi carved this sculpture out of stone for several years, it took several more years to settle a bureaucratic war with the municipality, which did not want to see this statue within the city. However, in 1880, the opening took place. True, at the expense of the sculptor himself. And only 50 years later the sculpture was recognized as a historical monument.
