Historically, this hill was the location of an ancient Roman settlement, that gave this hill its name. Historians still cannot agree on the origin of the name: some believe that the hill was named in honor of the god of war Mars, others associate the name with the persecution of Christians and the martyr who lived here, and translate the name as `` Hill of the Holy Martyr '' . In the Middle Ages, the hill was the territory of a Jesuit monastery, later the monks laid out the first vineyards in the vicinity. At the end of the 19th century, the famous Sacre-Coeur Basilica was built on the very top of the hill, which became one of the main temples of the French capital. The final construction was completed by 1914. The basilica style is called pseudo Romanesque or Byzantine. The temple is currently operating, services are held here every day. Tourists in the temple can be seen at any time of the year. Montmartre is also famous for its famous inhabitants – cultural workers. Dozens of artists, writers, composers, singers, musicians and actors were born and lived here.
