In XI – X centuries BC small settlements of Sikul lived here. The current city was founded on the site of the Akray settlement, which existed since 664 BC This settlement in ancient times was of great strategic importance, since it controlled the main roads on the southern coast of the island of Sicily. The ancient Greek historian Thucydides wrote that it was in this place in 263 BC. the Athenians were defeated by Syracuse. At the very beginning of the Christian era, Acreide flourished. It is believed that the city was destroyed by the Arabs in the 9th century. Over time, a new city was built around the old castle. In 1693, Acreid was destroyed by a strong earthquake.
