Palazzolo Acreide is a small town located near the city of Syracuse in the Ibleian Mountains.
Since time immemorial, this area was inhabited by people. In XI – X centuries BC small settlements of Sikul lived here. The current city was founded on the site of the Akray settlement, which existed since 664 BC This settlement in ancient times was of great strategic importance, since it controlled the main roads on the southern coast of the island of Sicily. The ancient Greek historian Thucydides wrote that it was in this place in 263 BC. the Athenians were defeated by Syracuse.
At the very beginning of the Christian era, Acreide flourished. It is believed that the city was destroyed by the Arabs in the 9th century. Over time, a new city was built around the old castle. In 1693, Acreid was destroyed by a strong earthquake.
Nowadays, the city has preserved many churches and temples, among which the churches of Santa Maria della Medalla, San Paolo, San Michele deserve attention , Assunta, San Sebastian and Santa Antonio. The Assunta Basilica today houses a statue of the Madonna, made in the second half of the 15th century from Carrara white marble.
It is also worth visiting the house-museum of A. Uccello, which displays a unique collection of objects related to to the peasant history of the island of Sicily. Here are stained glass windows, tools, wax figures and much more. The Archaeological Museum is also interesting, which is located in the Cappellani Palazzo.
