Villa Tugendhat in the Czech Republic, Brno resort
Rating: 8,0/10 (105 votes)  Villa Tunendgat, located in Brno, is the famous work of the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The building is considered a milestone in the development of the modernist style. The villa was built for the Tugendgata family in 1928-1930. In 2001, the building was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The villa is a prime example of functionalism. Thanks to the steel frame, a sense of light and volume was created inside the building. The architect also personally designed all the furniture. The decorative effect was created using materials with natural texture, such as certain types of wood and onyx. The onyx wall allows light to pass through and also changes color during sunset. The villa has two floors. The first floor only opens onto a park located on a hill. On the second floor there are living quarters – rooms for each family member and servants. The ground floor houses the kitchen and living rooms. The building also has a basement, which usually serves as a utility room. In 1938 the Tugendhat family was forced to leave Czechoslovakia. After the Second World War, the building was used for various purposes. In 1994, the villa opened to the public as a museum.
