The history of the museum dates back to 1984, when the Sea Life Museum was founded in Ayia Napa. In 1992, this museum was transformed into the Municipal Museum of Sea Inhabitants, and then into the Thalassa Sea Museum (2006).
The museum exhibits are located on three levels:
The first level is represented by paintings by local artists, a collection of unusual shells, fossils, corals, paleontological finds.
·The main exhibit of the second level is a copy of the ancient Greek ship Kyrenia-Eleftheria. This ship sank off the coast of Cyprus in the 4th century. Also on the same level is a copy of the boat"Papirella" (a Greek ship of the Stone Age), a large collection of archaeological finds: figurines, vases, masks and other artifacts. On the lower level, there are exhibits of stuffed birds, sea animals, natural-sized turtles, fossilized skeletons of various marine organisms. All the stuffed animals presented in museums were made after the natural death of one or another inhabitant of the sea.
In one of the halls of the museum, the seabed is recreated, such as in the days of the dinosaurs, in another hall, an episode of turtles laying their eggs in the sand is simulated.
The Museum of the Sea constantly hosts symposia, scientific conferences, where scientists present the results of their research.
The museum has a small gift shop where visitors can purchase copies of statuettes, prints, paintings and other souvenirs.
