Photo and description

The Anglican Cathedral in Stonetown was built in 1870. It was the very first Anglican church in all of East Africa. The cathedral was erected on the site of the destroyed central slave market of Zanzibar. An interesting history is connected with the construction of the cathedral. While the construction work was not yet complete, the chief architect went on a safari, leaving the black workers unattended. Imagine his surprise when, when he returned, he saw all eight columns near the entrance to the temple upside down! The stained glass window near the columns is dedicated to the British who died after 1870 in the fight against slave traders after the prohibition of the slave trade.
