Rating: 8,2/10 (1943 votes) Herod's Gate – one of the seven active gates of the walls of the old city was built in 1539 at the direction of Sultan Suleiman I the Magnificent. They were originally a small passageway to allow people and livestock to enter the city. In the 19th century, Herod's gate was reconstructed and enlarged. Fragments of an ancient guard post can be seen at the eastern facade of the gate. In 2010, the gate was restored again, work was carried out to restore the facade and internal premises.
