Suffering from earthquakes, it suffered destruction, but in 1160 it was rebuilt by order of the Byzantine emperor Manuel I Comnenus. There is a fairly widespread version according to which this monastery was erected on the place where the prophet Ilya was hiding from the anger of the ruler Israel Jezebel. It is also believed that the burial of Saint Elijah took place here. A visit to Mar Elias, according to legend, can help to recover from infertility or serious illness. The walls of this monastery are believed to have healing powers. We also recommend reading Town-Museum Tryavna in Bulgaria Topic: 6th century Greek monastery (Mar Elias) in Israel, Bethlehem resort. |
