Initially there were three columns , however, during unloading, one of the three columns sank. The columns are decorated with images of the patron saints of Venice – Saint Theodore (the first guardian of the city) and a winged lion (symbol of the Apostle Mark). The marble silhouette of Saint Theodore was composed of two parts – the portrait of Mithridates of Pontus was placed on a Roman torso during the period of Emperor Hadrian. Previously, executions were carried out between both pillars. We also recommend reading Clock Tower in Italy, Venice resort Topic: Columns of San Marco in Italy, Venice resort. |
