Photo and description

Flattnitz is a mountain pass in the Austrian Alps and a small ski resort located on this pass, near Glednitz in the north of Carinthia. The pass, located at an altitude of 1400 meters above sea level, connects the Gurktal and Murtal valleys. The Flatnitz Pass was known even during the reign of the ancient Romans. It is mentioned in the 898 documents. In 1176, by order of Bishop Gurk, the chapel of St. John the Baptist was built here. It was renovated in 1330 and became a parish church. Flattnitz was very fond of the bishops of Carinthia, who came here all summer. In the 17th century, deposits of silver, iron ore and lead were discovered near the pass. An old lime kiln has survived since that time. Flattnitz is very popular with winter sports enthusiasts. By the beginning of the descent, that is, to an altitude of 1840 meters, a chair lift of a rather old design, which was dismantled in the 2000s after a complaint from a local resident, lifted the guests earlier. The ski lift is still there on the large ski map with all marked ski runs available at the resort. In 2009, a high-speed lift was built, which now brings tourists to the top. The Flattitz resort offers its guests several black slopes. one of them goes directly under the cable car and ends at the bottom of the resort hotels. The second black trail has a very narrow section that only the most experienced skiers can overcome. There are also trails for beginners in the Flatnitz ski center.
