It is located in Tampere, in a former factory building, in one of the former workshops of the Tampella factory, whose industrial history began in 1840. with a small blast furnace. Later, metallurgical production merged with the textile industry, but despite a wide range of products - from locomotives to linen - the use of these buildings completely ceased in the 1990s.

At present, Vapriikki is a complex museum center, located on 4 floors with a total area of about 13,000 m2. More than half of the building is dedicated to exhibition space, restoration workshops, research laboratories and photo archives.

Throughout the year, about a dozen various exhibitions, temporary and permanent, are organized here, dedicated to archeology and contemporary art, history and technology.

Vapriikki also houses a Finnish hockey hall of fame, a Shoe Museum and a Doll Museum.
