The castle was built by the Rattkai noble family in the 16th century. The castle remained in the possession of this family until 1793. The oldest part of the complex had a protective function, later four semicircular towers were completed around it, and in the 17th century additional buildings were added in the northern part of the building. The history of the external appearance of Veliki Tabor Castle became known not only thanks to the efforts of archaeologists and researchers, but also thanks to the artist Oton Ivekovic, who captured the castle and its surroundings. The Veliki Tabor castle has recently completed extensive restoration work, after that, a museum was opened in its premises. There is a permanent exhibition here, and everyone can learn a lot about the architecture and history of the castle and its inhabitants, listen to fascinating stories and legends related to the history of the castle, as well as visit the exhibitions and seminars held here. One of the most visited expositions of the castle is dedicated to its history. Archaeological, historical and artistic-historical exhibits related to Veliki Tabor are exhibited here.
