Photo and descriptionAncient Roman warehouses and a necropolis are factual evidence discovered by scientists that even in ancient times Vrsar was a powerful city, which was considered not only by priests, but also by merchants. Ancient Roman warehouses are one of the most interesting historical sights of Vrsar. It all started with the fact that in 1928 a building was discovered in the city harbor, the base of which went 70 meters underground. Since it is known that Vrsar in the era of the Roman Empire was not just an ordinary city, but an important trade center, archaeologists concluded that the find was formerly Roman warehouses where various goods were stored. As for the necropolis in Vrsar, then it was discovered in the north of the city. Roman burial traces and elements pointing to the funeral rites carried out here, became evidence that the ashes of the dead were stored in urns, which were then buried in the ground. At the site of the harbor, after excavations, a Roman tombstone was found, which scientists were able to date to the 2nd century ... There is an inscription on it in Latin, which, apparently, the husband left in memory of his wife. Despite the fact that fragments of late Roman sarcophagi were found in the same area, all the tombstones of the 2nd century found in Vrsar are kept today in the local history museum of the city of Porec.
