Photo and description

The House of the Governor-General, also called the Governor's Palace, where the main building of the Engineering and Pedagogical Academy of Ukraine is located today, is an architectural monument of the 18th century. At one of the periods of its rich history, the house served as the main building for the Imperial University. It was built in 70-77. 18th century.

The implementation in practice of the initial project of the Moscow architect M. Tikhmenev was carried out by the Kharkiv architect Vilyanov I.M., and later the case passed into the hands of P.A. Yaroslavsky, who arrived from Moscow.

The palace, built according to the order of Empress Catherine II, he was honored to receive her only once, on the way to St. Petersburg from the Crimea. By the arrival of Her Majesty in the courtyard of the former governor, and at the moment - the governor-general's palace, a large & nbsp; "Ceremonial hall" made of wood.

Subsequently, the Yaroslavl and provincial mechanic Zakharzhevsky in 1791 rebuilt the wooden hall for the first permanent theater in the city. Performances were given here for five years. A year later, the premises were demolished.

Architect E.A. Vasiliev carried out a partial reconstruction of the governor's palace, after which a year later (in 1804) the building was transferred to the university, which opened in Kharkov. The architecture of the building uses a transitional form from Baroque to Classicism. Facing the central part of the building, partly rusticated outbuildings emphasize its elegance. Today the facade of the building is decorated with fluted Ionic pilasters. The entrances, executed in the form of magnificent triumphal arches, symmetrically located on both sides of the building. The central volume of the governor's house is richly decorated; compositions of niches with vases were used among the decorative elements. There are memorial signs on the facade of the building.
