The abbey's cathedral was built on the site of the cell of Saint Gall, the founder of this huge and famous abbey. Already in the middle of the 9th century, it was a whole wooden complex, including the crypt of St. Gaul and the chapel of the Archangel Michael. By decree of Abbot Celestine, construction of the current baroque building began in 1755 under the direction of architects Peter Thumb and Johann Beer. The main building of the cathedral was surrounded by various outbuildings, the residence of the abbot was located separately. Now the residence of the Bishop of St. Gallen is located in the left wing of the building.

The interior of the temple is decorated with frescoes with scenes from the life of St. Gall by D. Vannenmacher. The central dome depicts paradise, the Trinity and the saints with the apostles. Fine carvings adorn the choir benches, pulpit and altar with black gilded columns. In the south aisle there is a bell delivered by St. Gallom from Ireland - one of the oldest bells in Europe.
