Theater of Opera and Ballet. Musa Jalil is located on Freedom Square in the center of Kazan. The building of the theater began to be built in 1936. The author of the project was the Moscow architect N.P. Skvortsov. In 1948, the facades and interiors of the building were redone under the direction of the Kazan architect I.G. Gainutdinova.

Due to the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, the construction of the building proceeded slowly. It took almost 20 years to build it. In the construction work, the labor of German prisoners of war was used. Construction was completed in the mid-fifties. In 1956 the building of the new theater was opened with Zhiganov's opera "Altynchech".

The decoration of the building and its interiors acquired the features of modern neoclassicism. The decoration uses a combination of antique decor with traditional elements of Tatar decorative art. The main facade was decorated with an eight-column portico (of the Corinthian order) with a stylized national Tatar ornament. The doors of the main entrance to the theater are located between the pedestals of the facade columns. Between the columns, on the second floor level, there is a balustrade enclosing a spacious balcony. In the back of the balcony there are high windows on the second floor. Above the pediment of the portico are sculptures of the muses. On the side facades of the theater building there are semicircular niches, where sculptures of poets: Alexander Pushkin and Gabdulla Tukai are placed. The main facade of the building overlooks Freedom Square. The side facades overlook Pushkin Street and Teatralnaya Street. On Teatralnaya street, there is a service entrance to the theater building. There is a fountain at the back of the theater, surrounded by flower beds.

In 2005 the theater building was opened after a large-scale reconstruction. The theater stage was equipped with the most modern equipment. Large and comfortable rehearsal rooms have appeared in the building. The auditorium has become more comfortable. Its gilded ceiling is decorated with a huge chandelier made by Czech craftsmen. It exactly repeats the previous chandelier, which has fallen into disrepair from time to time. In the decoration of the theater building, granite, marble, Bohemian glass and figured parquet were used. The spectators rise to the seats located in tiers in a comfortable elevator.

The theater has a rich repertoire and a constantly full hall. In 1988 the theater was awarded the title of "Academic Theater". Every year the theater shows about 120 performances abroad. For many years, the theater has hosted international festivals every year. In February - the famous opera festival named after Fyodor Chaliapin, and in May - the festival of classical ballet. On June 19, 2008 in TAGTO and B named after M. Jalil, the only concert in Russia by Jose Carreras "Mediterranean Passion" was held.
