The La Leona Park was planned back in 1840 on the spur of El Picacho in La Leona district. Despite the legends about lions, which gave the name to the area, the first houses of wealthy people began to be built here. The municipality gave land to families who were interested in building and connecting to the sites of La Ronda and La Pedrera. The large arched residences were designed by the German immigrant Gustav Walter, and these buildings still survive today.

A series of transformations take place in Tegucigalpa between 1910 and 1930, the administration of President Lopez Gutierrez begins systemic construction work in La Leona Park under the direction of the architect Augusto Bressani. A huge stone wall was erected to prevent soil leaching during the rainy season, a street was paved along it, Rising in waves from La Pedrera, the street lamps were decorated with wrought iron elements in the French style, and in addition, in the center was placed a monument to General Manuel Bonilla (former president of the republic), made of bronze.

The government officially opened the park in 1925. Since then, La Leona has become a very popular place in the capital, as is one of the most picturesque parts of the city. In addition to various types of trees, a basketball court, alleys and paths, several old vases, the garden is famous for its breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings.
