Photo and descriptionThe Basilica of St. John is part of the monastery complex of St. John the Evangelist, which is located in Biograd. The former Benedictine monastery is now in ruins. At the same time, it was one of the most interesting architectural structures reminiscent of the past of Biograd. The monastery complex was built around 1060 during the reign of King Peter Kresimir IV of Croatia. It is worth noting that the heyday of the kingdom's power fell precisely on this period. The monastery of St. John the Theologian was built entirely at the expense of the king. In 1076 the monastery roof was reinforced, making the entire building much taller than before. The monastery, together with the basilica, was destroyed by the Venetians in an attempt to conquer Biograd in 1125. After that, the monks moved to the island of Pasman, where they re-founded the monastery, but this time Sts. Cosmas and Damian. Over time, only the foundation remained from the Basilica of St. John in Biograd, but even from its contours it can be concluded that the building was once a three-aisled basilica. The ruins were discovered by archaeologists in the city center. Of particular importance in the history of the monastery and the basilica are the preserved cartularia, that is, collections of documents that prove that the monastery lands on the territory of Biograd and Tkonski were appropriated legally in 1060 and in 1396, respectively. Bookmarks were also preserved in the caricularia, and notes in Glagolitic were seen in the margins. John, only the foundation remained in Biograd, but even according to its contours, it can be concluded that the building was once a three-nave basilica. The ruins were discovered by archaeologists in the city center.
