Photo and description

The largest museum in India is located in the capital of West Bengal, Kolkata. Its creation served as an impetus for an intensive study of the history and culture of the country and the opening of 40 more multi-purpose museums throughout India. And its rich collection of historical values and works of art makes it one of the most famous museums in the world.

The Museum of India was founded in 1814 at the initiative of the Asian Union of Bengal, created in 1784 by Sir William Jones. The idea of creation belonged to Dr. Nathaniel Wallich, as well as the first exhibits of the museum. Initially, it was supposed to create only two sections: the first - ethnological, archaeological and technical, and the second - geological and zoological. The guardians of the museum, who provided exhibits for its collection, besides Wallich himself, many wealthy people became, mostly Europeans, but also the Indian collector Babu Ramkamal Sen, who later became the first Indian secretary of the Asiatic Society. Subsequently, the collection has grown significantly, and by now the museum is divided into six sections and has a total of 35 galleries. Including in 1875 an additional building was built, to which part of the collection was transferred. And after the Asian Union, which was in charge of the museum, had financial difficulties, it came under the tutelage of the Ministry of Culture of India.

Among the most popular and attractive museum exhibits are the ashes of the remains of Buddha himself, skeletons of prehistoric animals, some very rare paintings and magnificent Tibetan thangkas.

The State Museum of India is the perfect place to visit for the whole family. A day spent there will bring a lot of useful knowledge and new impressions.
