Photo and description

Located on the shores of Lake Garda at the foot of the moraine hills, the small town of Lazise is considered one of the most popular local resorts. Its historic center, with its characteristic narrow streets and medieval squares, attracts thousands of tourists. It is here that Lake Garda reaches its greatest width - 17 km. And nearby is Kol à - famous spa resort with thermal springs.

It is believed that Lazise was inhabited even in prehistoric times - this is evidenced by the discovered remains of pile dwellings. In the era of ancient Rome, this was undoubtedly an important settlement, which is confirmed by numerous finds of ancient coins. In the 10th century, the Lombards appeared here, who built a castle and erected fortified walls around it. They also granted the local residents the right to freely fish. In the 12th century, Lazise became an independent commune, but not for long - soon it was ruled by the Scaliegr family, and then passed to the Visconti family. In 1405, like most other cities of Lake Garda, Lazise became part of the Venetian Republic. Then it was part of the Cisalpine Republic, from 1815 it was part of the Austrian Empire, and only in 1866 joined the united Italy.

Tourism is the main branch of the Lazise economy. It began to develop here in the middle of the 20th century, and thousands of tourists still come to the town, attracted by its picturesque landscapes and excellent opportunities for practicing various sports. Popular amusement parks are also located in the immediate vicinity of Lazise.

Among the sights of the city is Villa Bernini, built in the second half of the 19th century. It is located near the Scaliger Castle, built to protect Lazise. By the harbor stands the typically Romanesque church of San Nicolo from the 12th century, and next to it is the Villa Pergolana from the 16th century. Not far from the villa there is another church - Santa Maria delle Grazie. Also of note is the neoclassical church of San Zeno and San Martino, rebuilt in the 19th century. There are luxurious villas throughout the city - in addition to the above, it is also worth mentioning the Villa Botton, built in the medieval style, and Villa Baratta with a huge park. On the way to Bussolengo, you can see Mondragon, a feudal court that has retained its charm, with the church of San Faustino and San Jovita.
