The Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema was opened in Minsk in 1976. Its opening was timed by Belarusian filmmakers to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the release of the first national film "Lesnaya Byl". Until 2002, the museum had more of an archival function, being a departmental museum of the Belarusfilm film studio.

Until 1988, the museum was located in the building of the Church of Saints Simeon and Helena, where in those years the Union of Cinematographers of the Byelorussian SSR was located. In 2002, the museum was opened in a specially adapted recently restored building - an architectural monument of the early 20th century. Since 2005, the Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema has been a branch of the State Museum of the History of Theater and Musical Culture of the Republic of Belarus.

Three floors are open for regular visits. On the ground floor there is a modern small cinema hall for 50 seats and a video hall for 10 seats for retrospective screenings of films and video materials to visitors.

The permanent exhibition of the museum is located on the second floor. The scenery for the world famous Belarusian films, which have become classics of modern cinema, costumes, and props are kept here. Here is a gallery of fame of Belarusian artists who played at Belarusfilm. The total area of the exposition is 140 square meters. Thematic excursions, events, holidays, meetings with actors, directors, and other interesting people related to Belarusian cinema are held.

The third floor is reserved for exhibitions. Themed exhibitions on the history of cinema are held on an area of 100 square meters.
