Photo and Description

The Kali Amman Temple is the only Hindu temple on Pangkor Island. The influence of Indian culture in the country is quite large, and Hindu temples are visited places in all states. Although the main migration of Indians to Malaysia dates back to the 19th and early 20th centuries, the history of the Tamil community on the peninsula goes back to prehistoric times. And the oldest Hindu temple was built in 1781.

In Malaysia, there are only two temples with the goddess Kali at the entrance, one is on the island of Penang, the second is the temple of Sri Patira Kali Amman in Pangkor. In Hinduism, Kali is the goddess who guides life from conception to death. In the sacred Vedas, her name is associated with the god of fire.

The Kali Amman Temple differs from other religious institutions of Hinduism in its external simplicity. Its general architectural style is close to minimalism, only a high tower, decorated with figures of all deities, corresponds to traditions. The interior decoration is more typical, with various statues of deities by Indian craftsmen and sacred relics. The temple is located on the coast, its low staircase descends directly to the sea. This also meets the religious rules, according to which believers must cleanse themselves before entering the temple.

Some rules apply to tourists: they are asked to enter the temple hall without shoes and in conservative clothes.

For the Indian diaspora, the island is a very important place where not only deities can be worshiped. The temple unites the community, contributes to the tranquility and harmony of its members. It is open to tourists as a museum where you can learn about Hinduism and Indian culture.
