Photo and description

The Church of St. George in Kamenets-Podolsk is located on the Polish farm at 54 Suvorova Street. For the first time, a church with this name on the Polish farm was mentioned in the acts of 1740. The church was originally wooden, with three domes and a bell tower. In the 18th century, the church was Uniate, and became Orthodox in 1795.

According to archival data, the stone church of St. George was built over 10 years and consecrated on October 15, 1861. The old wooden one was dismantled, a stone cross was erected in the place of the throne of the old church, and on the west side there is an icon depicting St. George on a horse, which is pierced by a snake. Separately from the new church in 1863, a stone bell tower was erected in three floors, of which the lower two were residential, and on the third six bells were installed. In the interior of the church, during the research, fragments of painting by D. Zhudin were found, made for the 50th anniversary of the church, in 1911.

During the times when the Soviet government persecuted religion, the Church of St. George suffered less than other churches in Kamenets ... It was closed in the mid-1950s, after which its building was used as a salt warehouse. In the 1980s, the church premises were converted into a planetarium, which was closed in the early 1990s.

In October 1990, the City Council decided to transfer the premises of the church to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. The community of believers eliminated the traces of the planetarium in the church and installed the iconostasis. Unfortunately, D. Zhudin's wall paintings have not survived.

The Church of St. George is an architectural monument of the times of the Russian Empire. Its five-headed silhouette stands out clearly against the background of residential buildings. The facade is decorated in a pseudo-Russian style, which gives the church a luxurious and elegant look.
