Photo and description

Located in an old building of the late 19th century. The building, in the style of German classicism, is an architectural monument. Previously, there was the main post office, and the house was called the Post Palace.

The status of a national museum was received when it was opened in 1980 - as the first historical and archaeological museum in the country. Those that existed before did not have such a volume of exhibits on display. The exposition of the National Historical Museum is the most complete and historically significant.

Partially damaged by the 1977 earthquake, the building and collection of the museum were then restored. In the future, the exposition was repeatedly presented abroad, at prestigious international exhibitions.

In 41 halls of the museum there are exhibits of the history of Wallachia, and then, Romania, from ancient times to our times. Of particular interest is the National Treasury Hall: three thousand gold items, as well as jewels, including royal ones, which were owned by the last Romanian monarchs. The main value of the exposition is 12 pieces of jewelry dating back to the XIV century. The collection itself is located in Pietroasela. It was first exhibited in Paris in 1867 at an international fair. At that time, it was considered the largest and most expensive in the world.

In the sections related to archeology, artifacts of the Neolithic and Paleolithic times, parts of decorative elements of ancient buildings, gravestones and other monuments are exhibited. Permanent archaeological exhibitions - Historical Thesaurus, Lapidarium and Trajan's Column. The last one is interesting for its bas-reliefs, telling about the conquest of the Dacians by the Roman emperor Trajan - the ancestors of modern Romanians. The statue of this emperor has been decorating the central entrance to the museum since 2012.

The museum is a platform where the world's best archaeological collections are regularly exhibited.
