The Museum of Modern Art is located 10 minutes' drive from Trujillo's administrative center. The museum was founded in 2006 thanks to the famous Peruvian artist Gerardo Chavez.

The museum is housed in a modern building surrounded by a large garden with lush vegetation and a small pond with a mirror-like cool water surface. Visitors to the museum are greeted by an outdoor exhibition of contemporary sculptures. The decoration of the walls of the museum, imitating masonry of limestone, is a reminder of the pre-Hispanic past of Peru.

The building of the museum was designed in such a way that its exhibits could be viewed in natural light. On June 11, 2011, a new stage in the history of this young museum began. On this day, an agreement was signed according to which the University of Privada Antenor Orrego (UPAO) is in charge of the management of the museum, and Gerardo Chavez is the director and curator of the museum.
