Photo and description

The old Luis de Camoes park with grottoes like gardens of Suzhou has been perfectly preserved to this day and is a popular attraction in Macau. The name of the park, atypical for the Celestial Empire, appeared in honor of the famous Portuguese poet who visited this city more than once. There is a sculptural monument to Luis de Camoes in the grotto.

At first, this park belonged to a wealthy Portuguese merchant, a great bird lover, who placed original buildings in the park that looked like bird nests. Later, already in the 13th century, the park became the property of a certain British company, and it became owned by the city authorities of Macau only 100 years later.

The state status received by the park allowed it to be named after a poet, who lived here for a long time. The poet's favorite place was the grottoes. It is possible that one of his poems "The Soul of Portugal" was written here. And at the very beginning of the 19th century, three centuries later, a bust was installed in the poet's favorite grotto, which is still there.

The local population has long been using the park for chess battles, leisurely walks and other favorite activities, which include centuries-old trees, benches near fountains, and amazing Chinese pavilions. Traditionally, people also come here to release special decorative birds.

In the middle of the park there is a sculpture "Embrace", the symbolic name of which reflects the unity of Chinese and Portuguese cultures.

A wide variety of exotic plants, amazing vistas opening onto the city, wonderful sculptural compositions - all this makes the Parc Luis de Camoes unique. Tourists visiting this magnificent place will surely be captivated by the peaceful atmosphere that prevails here.
