Temple of the goddess A-Ma in China, Macau resort

This famous and one of the most ancient temples of the peninsula was built in honor of Kun Lam – Buddhist goddess of mercy and A-ma – Taoist goddess. According to legend, A-Ma was a poor girl. For a long time he persuaded the fishermen to take her to Macau from Canton. One fisherman took pity on her, and on the night of sailing all boats, except for this fisherman's boat, sank. Then the inhabitants of the city realized that the sea gods themselves were the patrons of the girl. Soon, all the fishermen who survived went out to land and built a temple there in honor of A-Ma. In this sacred place, the fishermen asked for the blessing of the goddess every time before going to sea. The place where the temple was located, called the bay of the goddess A-Ma – A-Ma Gao. Gradually, this name developed into 'Macau', which is still the name of the peninsula. This name was finally approved in 1557, during the ceremony of transferring Macau to Portugal on lease. The ceremony, by the way, took place in this temple. The temple was built in 1488. It is a complex of altars and buildings, as well as temples dedicated to various gods. The whole complex is made in the traditional Chinese style, with upturned eaves and small turrets, in which services are still underway.
