Avenue of the Knights description and photos - Greece: Rhodes. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Avenue of the Knights. Photo and descriptionStreet of the Knights (or "Odos Ippoton") is an old street in Rhodes, running eastward from the gates of the Palace of the Grand Masters. In the daytime, the calmness of the thick walls of her houses and the stone pavement is disturbed only by groups of tourists listening to the words of the guide. The interiors of the buildings located on Knights Street are unique, but since most of them house institutions, urban and cultural objects, the entrance for visitors is possible only with a special permit. The absence of retail outlets and souvenir kiosks made it possible to maintain the architectural integrity of the street. But its modern appearance does not correspond to the medieval one - noise, disorder and dirt reigned here - after all, in this place there were one-story stables for knightly horses. The knights were divided into national groups, which were called "Tongues" for simplicity. Each had its own house, which was a place for meetings and receiving guests. Some of them were located just on Odos Ippoton. For example, the house of Provence, the house of Spain and the most memorable one is the house of the French knights (in the middle of the street, on the north side). The building has a stone vaulted staircase, battlements on the walls, and crocodile-shaped fountains. The uniformity of flat, unadorned walls is broken only by marble coats of arms. Through the narrow, southbound alleys, the noise of the neighboring streets is heard here.
