Photo and description

In the southeastern part of the city of Asenovgrad you can admire the Church of St. George. This is a temple complex that was erected in 1845-1848 in a specially designated courtyard, surrounded by high stone walls with fountains in stone niches decorated with mosaics. A one-story wooden extension was subsequently built over the entrance to the church grounds. Initially, the building was used as a temple, in the courtyard of which the school was located.

By its size, the church is the largest in the city: it is 35 meters long and 18 meters wide; the highest dome reaches 16 meters. The main building was built of white stone brought from the village of Korudere (now in Turkey). Also, during the construction, the mineral syenite was used, mined in the hills near the city of Plovdiv.

The basilica consists of an apse and three naves: two rows of six columns divide the space of the temple into three parts. The walls and ceiling inside the complex are painted with frescoes depicting the faces of Christ, saints and angels, as well as scenes from the Bible. The interior design is dominated by blue and blue colors. The roof of the church is decorated with three low towers with domes. The central and largest of them is azure. The temple walls are crowned with two bell towers, the walls of which are whitewashed and painted with exquisite designs in turquoise blue and frescoes.
