Photo and description

Theologos is a picturesque mountain village on the Greek island of Thassos. It is located at an altitude of about 200-220 m above sea level, 10 km north of Potos and 55 km south of the island's capital. This is a very beautiful settlement that has a rich centuries-old history and is famous for its traditional architecture.

Theologos history goes back to the distant past. The settlement received its modern name, presumably, in the Byzantine era. Until the beginning of the 20th century, Theologos played an important role in the political and economic life of the island. During the Turkish (1455-1813) and Egyptian (1813-1902) domination, the island was the seat of the government.

In 1979, the Greek government proclaimed Theologos a cultural capital and an important historical monument, limiting the construction of new buildings and setting clear criteria and standards for the reconstruction of magnificent old buildings. Thus, it was possible to preserve the historical and cultural values as well as the charming atmosphere of a traditional Greek settlement. Today in Theologos you can see many beautiful old houses with slate roofs. Some structures date back to the 16th century.

The main attractions of Theologos include the Church of St. Demetrius (built in 1803) with a magnificent carved wooden altar, which depicts scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Also of particular interest is the entertaining Ethnographic Museum, located in the center of the village in the perfectly preserved mansion of the leader of the Greek rebels Hatzigeorgis.

Walking along the narrow cobbled streets, interesting architectural structures, acquaintance with culture and traditions, as well as the picturesque surroundings of Theologos will give you a lot of pleasure and impressions. The local taverns, which are famous for their excellent cuisine, are also worth a visit.
